PART 1 – TENEBRAS (Darkness)

Collect for Vigil *

Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
L: Let us pray.
ALL: Lighten our darkness, O Lord, and by your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
Leader: On this night, our Lord Jesus Christ passed over from death to life. The Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer, remembering God’s great mercy. This is the Passover of the Lord, in which through word and sacrament we share in Jesus’ victory over death.

SONG – Abide With Me *

1 Abide with me fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless O abide with me

2 I need Thy presence ev’ry passing hour
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r
Who like Thyself my Guide and Stay can be
Through cloud and sunshine Lord abide with me

3 I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness
Where is death’s sting where grave thy victory
I triumph still if Thou abide with me

4 Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heav’n’s morning breaks
And earth’s vain shadows flee
In life in death O Lord abide with me

The Liturgy of the Word

NARRATIVE 1 – The Story of Creation – Genesis 1:1 – 2:3

Before and after the lesson, we say:

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
and by the breath of his mouth all their host. [Psalm 33:6]

SONG – Te Deum *

1 Holy God, we praise Your name;
Lord of all, we bow before You.
Saints on earth your rule acclaim;
All in heav’n above adore You.
Infinite Your vast domain;
Everlasting is Your reign.

2 Hark, the glad celestial hymn
Angel choirs above are raising;
Cherubim and seraphim,
In unceasing chorus praising,
Fill the heav’ns with sweet accord:
“Holy, holy, holy Lord!”

3 Lo, the apostolic train
joins Your sacred name to hallow;
prophets swell the glad refrain,
and the white-robed martyrs follow;
and from morn to set of sun,
through the church the song goes on.

4 Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, three we name You,
Though in essence only one;
Undivided God, we claim You,
And, adoring, bend the knee
While we own the mystery.

NARRATIVE 2 – The Flood  – Genesis 7:6-10, 17-24, 8:13-19

Before and after the lesson, we say:

The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring.
Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty! [Psalm 93:3-4]

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

1 A mighty fortress is our God
A bulwark never failing
Our helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe
His craft and pow’r are great
And armed with cruel hate
On earth is not his equal

2 Did we in our own strength confide
Our striving would be losing
Were not the right Man on our side
The Man of God’s own choosing
Dost ask who that may be
Christ Jesus it is He
Lord Sabaoth His name
From age to age the same
And He must win the battle

3 And tho’ this world with devils filled
Should threaten to undo us
We will not fear for God hath willed
His truth to triumph thru us
The prince of darkness grim
We tremble not for him
His rage we can endure
For lo his doom is sure
One little word shall fell him

4 That word above all earthly pow’rs
No thanks to them abideth
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Thru Him who with us sideth
Let goods and kindred go
This mortal life also
The body they may kill
God’s truth abideth still
His kingdom is forever

Collect of the Flood *

Let us pray.

Almighty God, who brought Noah and his family to safety through water: Grant to us who are born again by water and the Spirit that we may be faithful to our calling as your adopted children through Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

NARRATIVE 3 – The Sacrifice of Isaac – Genesis 22:1-18

Before and after the lesson, we say:

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. [Psalm 67:1-2]

I’ll Note Be Shaken (Psalm 62)*

For God alone, I wait in silence;
My soul is still before the Lord.
He is my rock and my salvation,
My fortress strong; I trust in Him.

I’ll not be shaken! I’ll not be shaken,
For all my hope is in His love.
From God alone comes my salvation;
I wait and trust His steadfast love!

Put not your hope in gain of riches;
Seek not your rest in empty wealth.
The rich are weak; the poor are mighty,
Who turn to God alone for help.

Pour out your heart to God our refuge
And trust in Him to hear you cry.
No other hope will never fail you;
No other love will not run dry.

We’ll not be shaken! We’’ll not be shaken,
For all our hope is in His love.
From God alone comes our salvation;
We wait and trust His steadfast love!

NARRATIVE 4 – The Deliverance of Israel – Exodus 6:2-8, 14:5-9, 13-14, 21-29

Before and after the lesson, we say

Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. [Exodus 15:21]

No Longer Slaves*

1 You unravel me with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance from my enemies
Till all my fears are gone

I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

2 From my Mother’s womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again into Your family
Your blood flows through my veins

You split the sea so I could walk right through it
My fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me so I could stand and sing
I am a child of God

Litany of Confession

Please kneel as you are able

Let us pray.
God the Father,
have mercy upon us.
God the Son,
have mercy upon us.
God the Holy Spirit,
have mercy upon us.
Holy Blessed and glorious Trinity,
have mercy upon us.
From all unrighteousness; from pride, vanity, and hypocrisy; from envy, hatred, and malice; and from all evil desires,
good Lord, deliver us.
From laziness, worldliness, and love of money; from hardness of heart, and contempt for your word and your laws,
good Lord, deliver us.
From sins of body and mind; from the deceits of the world, the flesh, and the devil,
good Lord, deliver us.
In all times of sorrow; in all times of joy; in the hour of death, and at the day of judgment,
good Lord, deliver us.
By the mystery of your holy incarnation; by your birth, childhood, and obedience; by your baptism, fasting, and temptation,
good Lord, deliver us.
By your ministry in word and work; by your mighty acts of power; and by your preaching of the kingdom,
good Lord, deliver us.
By your agony and trial; by your cross and passion; and by your precious death and burial,
good Lord, deliver us.
By your mighty resurrection; by your glorious ascension; and by your sending of the Holy Spirit,
good Lord, deliver us.
Hear our prayers, O Lord our God.
Hear us, good Lord.
Govern and direct your holy Church; fill it with love and truth; and grant it that unity which is your will.
Hear us, good Lord.
Give us boldness to preach the gospel in all the world, and to make disciples of all the nations.
Hear us, good Lord.
Enlighten our bishops and all who minister with knowledge and understanding, that by their teaching and their lives they may proclaim your word.
Hear us, good Lord.
Give your people grace to hear and receive your word, and to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit.
Hear us, good Lord.
Bring into the way of truth all who have erred and are deceived.
Hear us, good Lord.
Strengthen those who stand; comfort and help the faint-hearted; raise up the fallen; and finally beat down Satan under our feet.
Hear us, good Lord.
Guide the leaders of the nations into the ways of peace and justice.
Hear us, good Lord.
Guard and strengthen your servants Donald Trump, our president, Roy Cooper, our governor, and Nancy McFarlane, our mayor, that they may put their trust in you, and seek your honor and glory.
Hear us, good Lord.
Bless those who administer the law, that they may uphold justice, honesty and truth.
Hear us, good Lord.
Help and comfort the lonely, the bereaved, and the oppressed.
Lord, have mercy.
Heal the sick in body and mind, and provide for the homeless, the hungry, the destitute,
Lord, have mercy.
Show your pity on prisoners and refugees, and all who are in trouble.
Lord, have mercy.
Forgive our enemies, persecutors and slanderers, and turn their hearts.
Lord, have mercy.
We give thanks for those who have died in the peace of Christ. Grant us with them a share in your eternal kingdom.
Lord, have mercy.

Our Father In Heaven (The Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your Name
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done on earth as in heav’n

Give us today our daily bread
Forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us
Save us from the time of trial
And deliver us from evil

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
Now and forever, Amen.

The seeds of Your kingdom
For the day You will reap them
Your sheaves we will carry
Lord please do not tarry
All those who sow weeping
Will go out with songs of joy

The nations will sing songs of joy

And great are You Lord

It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

Our hearts will cry these bones will sing

NARRATIVE 8 – The Appearing of the Messiah – John 1:1-14

Before and after the lesson, we say

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people
And raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David. [Luke 1:68-69]

Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery *

1 Come behold the wondrous mystery
In the dawning of the King
He the theme of heaven’s praises
Robed in frail humanity
In our longing, in our darkness
Now the light of life has come
Look to Christ, who condescended
Took on flesh to ransom us

2 Come behold the wondrous mystery
He the perfect Son of Man
In His living, in His suffering
Never trace nor stain of sin
See the true and better Adam
Come to save the hell-bound man
Christ the great and sure fulfillment
Of the law; in Him we stand

Collect of Baptism *

Let us pray.
Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

NARRATIVE 9 – The Coming of the Kingdom –Mark 1:9-28

Before and after the lesson, we say

For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help.
He will take pity on the weak and the needy, and save the needy from death. [Psalm 72:12-13]

Dawning Light of Our Salvation *

1. Long in darkness Israel wandered;
Long in mortal shadows, we
Walked in bondage and self-pity,
Trod in paths of sin and grief.
In the prophets’ words He told us,
Long the God of Israel spoke;
He alone in strength would save us
From the hands of all our foes.

Every valley be exalted!
Every mountain be made plane!
Crooked ways repent and straighten;
All creation bend in praise!

2. He shall raise a mighty Savior;
Born of David’s lineage, He
Comes in cov’nant love to claim us
From our sins to set us free.
Light to those who dwell in darkness
Life to those from death who flee
Joy unto the earth, and gladness,
To your pathways dawning peace!

3. Jesus, Lord, and mighty Savior,
David’s Son and yet his King,
Dawning light of our salvation,
Of your saving pow’r we sing!
Stand, Oh lame, and dance ye broken,
Know the Savior’s healing grace;
Come, Oh deaf and hear him singing;
Turn, Oh blind, behold his face!

Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery (Reprise) *

3 Come behold the wondrous mystery
Christ the Lord upon the tree
In the stead of ruined sinners
Hangs the Lamb in victory
See the price of our redemption
See the Father’s plan unfold
Bringing many sons to glory
Grace unmeasured, love untold

NARRATIVE 10 – The Crucifixion – Mark 15:21-47

Before and after the lesson, we say

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? [Psalm 22:1]

Oh Sacred Head (Passion Chorale)

1 O sacred Head now wounded
With grief and shame weighed down
Now scornfully surrounded
With thorns Thine only crown
O sacred Head what glory
What bliss till now was Thine
Yet tho’ despised and gory
I joy to call Thee mine

2 What Thou my Lord hast suffered
Was all for sinners’ gain
Mine mine was the transgression
But Thine the deadly pain
Lo here I fall my Savior
‘Tis I deserve Thy place
Look on me with Thy favor
Vouchsafe to me Thy grace

3 Men mock and taunt and jeer Thee
Thou noble countenance
Though mighty worlds shall fear Thee
And flee before Thy glance
How art Thou pale with anguish
With sore abuse and scorn
How doth Thy visage languish
That once was bright as morn

4 What language shall I borrow
To thank Thee dearest friend
For this Thy dying sorrow
Thy pity without end
O make me Thine forever
And should I fainting be
Lord let me never never
Outlive my love to Thee

Reflection in Silence

PART 2 – LUX (Light)

Lux Christus Processional *

The light of Christ!
Thanks be to God!

Processional Song – O the Deep Deep Love of Jesus *

1 O the deep deep love of Jesus
Vast unmeasured boundless free
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its fullness over me
Underneath me all around me
Is the current of Thy love
Leading onward leading homeward
To my glorious rest above

2 O the deep deep love of Jesus
Spread His praise from shore to shore
How He loveth ever loveth
Changeth never nevermore
How He watches o’er His loved ones
Died to call them all His own
How for them He intercedeth
Watches over them from the throne

3 O the deep deep love of Jesus
Love of every love the best
‘Tis an ocean vast of blessing
‘Tis a haven sweet of rest
O the deep deep love of Jesus
‘Tis a heaven of heavens to me
And it lifts me up to glory
For it lifts me up to Thee

NARRATIVE 11 – The Resurrection of Our Lord – Mark 16:1-8

The Exsultet *

Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and choirs of angels, and let your trumpets shout salvation for the victory of our mighty King! Rejoice and sing now, all the earth, bright with a glorious splendor, for darkness has been vanquished by our eternal King. Rejoice and be glad now, Mother Church, and let your holy courts, in radiant light, resound with the praises of your people.

The Lord be with you!
And also with you!
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God!
It is right to give him thanks and praise!
It is right and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere, with our whole heart and mind and voice, to praise you, the invisible, almighty, and eternal God, through your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Lamb of God, who at the Passover feast paid for us the debt of Adam’s sin, and by his blood delivered us from death.
Glory to you forever!
This is the night, when you brought our fathers, the children of Israel, out of bondage in Egypt, and led them through the sea on dry land.
Glory to you forever!
This is the night, when Jesus Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave.
Glory to you forever!
This is the night, when all who believe in him are delivered from the guilt and power of sin, and restored to grace and holiness of life.
Glory to you forever!
How wonderful and beyond our knowing, O God, is your mercy and loving-kindness to us, that to redeem a slave, you gave a Son.
Glory to you forever!
How blessed is this night, when earth and heaven are joined and man is reconciled to God.
Glory to you forever!
Therefore, heavenly Father, accept our sacrifice of praise; and grant our darkness to be light! For Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

The Easter Acclamation *

Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ is risen!
The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Alleluia, Alleluia *

Alleluia! Alleluia!
Hearts to heav’n and voices raise
Sing to God a hymn of gladness
Sing to God a hymn of praise

He who on the cross as Savior
For the world’s salvation bled
Jesus Christ the King of Glory
Now is risen from the dead

Worship Christ the Risen King *

1 Rise O Church and lift your voices
Christ has conquered death and hell
Sing as all the earth rejoices
Resurrection anthems swell
Come and worship come and worship
Worship Christ the Risen King

2 Hear the earth protest and tremble
See the stone removed with pow’r
All hell’s minions may assemble
But cannot withstand His hour
He has conquered He has conquered
Christ the Lord the Risen King

3 We acclaim Your life O Jesus
Now we sing Your victory
Sin or hell may seek to seize us
But Your conquest keeps us free
Stand in triumph stand in triumph

Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery *

4 Come behold the wondrous mystery
Slain by death the God of life
But no grave could e’er restrain Him
Praise the Lord; He is alive!
What a foretaste of deliverance
How unwavering our hope
Christ in power resurrected
As we will be when he comes

The Paschal Homily of St. John Chrysostom

The Affirmation of Our Faith

Do you renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, and the sinful desires of the flesh so that you will not follow nor be led by them?
I renounce them all.
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching, in the fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you persevere in resisting evil, and whenever you fall into sin, repent, and return to the Lord?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you proclaim by word and deed the Good News of God in Christ?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you seek to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind; and will you seek to love your neighbor as yourself?
I will, with God’s help.
May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, granting us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

There is One Lord *

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
There is one God who is Father of all.

Sanctus *

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might
Heaven and earth are full of your glory (repeat)

Hosanna, Hosanna
In the highest
Hosanna, Hosanna
In the highest

Blessed, blessed is He
Who comes in the name of the Lord
Hosanna in the highest

Hosanna, Hosanna
In the highest
Hosanna, Hosanna
In the highest

The Acclamation of Faith *

Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died!
Christ is risen!
Christ will come again!

It Is Finished

Hark, the voice of love and mercy
Sounds aloud from Calvary
See, it rends the rocks asunder
Shakes the earth and veils the sky
“It is finished, it is finished,” hear the dying Savior cry
“It is finished, it is finished,” hear the dying Savior cry

“It is finished,” O what pleasure
Do these charming words afford
Heavenly blessings, without measure
Flow to us from Christ the Lord
“It is finished, it is finished,”
Saints the dying words record
“It is finished, it is finished,”
Saints the dying words record

Finished all the types and shadows
Of the ceremonial law
Finished all that God had promised
Death and hell no more shall awe
“It is finished, it is finished,”
Saints from hence your comfort draw
“It is finished, it is finished,”
Saints from hence your comfort draw

Tune your harps, anew, ye seraphs
Join to sing the pleasing theme
Saints on earth and all in heaven
Join to praise Immanuel’s name
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Glory to the bleeding lamb!
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Glory to the bleeding lamb!

In Christ Alone

1 In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand

2 In Christ alone! who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save:
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live

3 There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

4 No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
‘Til He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

Christ Is Mine Forevermore

1 Mine are days that God has numbered
I was made to walk with Him
Yet I look for worldly treasure
And forsake the King of kings
But mine is hope in my Redeemer
Though I fall His love is sure
For Christ has paid for every failing
I am His forevermore

2 Mine are tears in times of sorrow
Darkness not yet understood
Through the valley I must travel
Where I see no earthly good

But mine is peace that flows from heaven
And the strength in times of need
I know my pain will not be wasted
Christ completes His work in me

3 Mine are days here as a stranger
Pilgrim on a narrow way
One with Christ I will encounter
Harm and hatred for His name

But mine is armour for this battle
Strong enough to last the war
And He has said He will deliver
Safely to the golden shore

And mine are keys to Zion city
Where beside the King I walk
For there my heart has found its treasure
Christ is mine forevermore

Come rejoice now O my soul
For His love is my reward
Fear is gone and hope is sure
Christ is mine forevermore

We Will Feast In The House Of Zion

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored
He has done great things, we will say together
We will feast and weep no more

We will not be burned by the fire
He is the LORD our God
We are not consumed, by the flood
Upheld, protected, gathered up

In the dark of night, before the dawn
My soul, be not afraid
For the promised morning, oh how long?
Oh God of Jacob, be my strength

Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed
You are the Faithful one
And from the garden to the grave
Bind us together, bring shalom.

The Song of Thanksgiving *

Mighty God we thank and praise you
For this meal, this Bread of Life;
Precious blood and body, broken,
From your Son our Savior, Christ.

In these mysteries you assure us
We are members of your Son;
Heirs of your eternal Kingdom,
With all faithful people, One.

Humbly now we ask you, Father,
In your grace, to make us strong,
That, with all the saints before us,
In good works we may press on!

Send us out to love and serve you!
Send us out to sing your praise!
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Pow’r and glory to your name!
